Stephen Joseph Hlafka Sr. age 88 of Brook Park, passed away peacefully January 13, 2022. Stephen is preceded in death by Doris, his beloved wife of 65 years. Loving father of Stephen Jr. (Barbara), Sandra (James) Giffin, John (Kimberly), and Denise (Danny) Keith. Dear brother of the late Leonard, John, Anna, Frank, Agnes, and Joe. Cherished grandfather of Nicole Schneider (Jason Prime), Katie (Michael) Myers, Ryan (Stephanie) Giffin, Wayne (Kelly Christman-Schneider) Schneider, Traci Hlafka (Robert Sackett), Jake Hlafka, and Sara Giffin. Great grandfather of Wyatt, Madeline, Emmie, and Ella.
Steve served in the Army during the Korean War and was awarded a Bronze Star. He worked three jobs when he was younger to support his family working at Kroger’s and Kinney Shoe Store, until going full time at the Post Office, where he worked for 30 years. After retirement he kept busy working at McDonalds. He was a walker, bowled for over 50 years and golfed. He served Meals on Wheels to people younger than him. Steve was the primary care giver for his wife Doris for the last three years of her life. He discovered a talent for baking, especially Banana Bread and Banana Oatmeal Raisin cookies which he gave away to family and friends. Steve was very religious, praying for his family and friends. Steve lived a good life during his 88 years and was the best husband, dad, granddad and great granddad. He will be missed immensely.
The family will receive friends in celebration of Stephen’s life at Humenik Funeral Chapel 14200 Snow Rd Brook Park, 44142 on Wednesday January 19, 2022 from 3-7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Mary Queen of the Apostles 6455 Engle Rd. Brook Park, 44142 Thursday at 9:30 AM. In lieu of flowers family suggests contributions to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Memorials Processing, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105-9959 or Hospice of the Western Reserve, Contributions, 300 East 185th St., Cleveland, OH 44119-1330.
