DOROTHY CUMMINS (nee Ferko), age 85, of Brookpark, Ohio passed away peacefully on Friday May 8th, 2020, with family by her bedside. Devoted daughter of the late Helen and Joseph Ferko. Survived by her five children Jim Cummins, Eddie Cummins (Dawn), Brian Cummins (Gayle), Joseph Cummins and Julie (Robert) Lanigan; loving grandmother of Nathan Patterson, Cole and Jamie Cummins, Adalyne and Tatum Cummins, Francis and Aila Lanigan, Father of the children James Cummins; sister of Mary (Dirk, Frank deceased), Patsy (Merker, Gil deceased) and Betty (Wilke, William deceased).
Dorothy was born in Cleveland, Ohio and attended St. Ignatius and graduated from St. Stephen’s High School. After marriage, her family spent many years in Avon, Ohio where she was active at St. Mary’s of the Immaculate Conception Church and School. She was known as the “Hot Dog Lady” because she ran the limited school lunch program. She was also one of the founding members of the St. Mary’s Oktoberfest Committee. Dorothy was very active in the Avon High School Band Boosters. She then moved to Cartersvile, Georgia. There, she was the Church Administrator and Director of Religious Education for St. Francis Church, and assisted in the building of a new church to accommodate the growing parish.
She returned to Ohio and served as Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary Queen of the Apostles Parish in Brookpark. She remained a member of good standing in the Little Flower Mission Circle with a number of her grade school friends.
A private showing will be held on Thursday May 14, 2020 Humenik Funeral Chapel 14200 Snow Rd Brook Park, 44142, where a funeral service will then be held on Friday. The showing, service and burial at Holy Cross Cemetery are for the immediate family and arranged guests.
